It's always worth booking ahead when visiting Barcelona as the city can be packed with both tourists and commercial visitors.

There's a wide choice on offer right across Barcelona and it's worth checking for the best Barcelona deals. Hotels and apartments tend to be concentrated in the city centre and close to all the main tourist sights.

Below we outline just a small selection of Barcelona hotels, election ranging from the more affordable to those offering sheer luxury. Many hotels have opened or had massive makeovers recently.

Barcelona hostels

Travellers heading to Barcelona for a budget weekend break will find Barcelona hostels and excellent and cost-effective alternative to staying in an expensive hotel. Be sure to book early though as they are hugely popular, especially from early June to August.

A Barcelona hostel, as in most of Spain, is equivalent to a bed and breakfast where breakfast may be included or not. Good value hostels can be found right across the city, from quiet streets in the Gothic area to the outskirts.

A youth hostel, with dormitories is called an "albergue juvenil". Accommodation provided at youth hostels is basic, but they provide all the facilities and won't break the bank.

Barcelona apartments are the ideal place to stay when visiting this vibrant city. There is a great range of Barcelona accommodation for you to choose from providing a stylish, convenient and affordable bases in the heart of the city.

Barcelona bed & breakfast

If you are looking for a good quality Barcelona bed & breakfast, try Ally's Guest, located in the centre of the city just steps away from the main business and shopping streets Diagonal and Paseo de Gracia with many attractions such as the Sagrada Familia, Plaza Catalonia, Casa Mila (La Pedrera) and Casa Batlló are all within walking distance.

Alternatively, Barcino 147 is located in the heart of Barcelona. It's a spacious apartment that's been renovated and furnished with local art and antiques. The proprietor is a Spanish artist and art collector and is an excellent resource for information.

Barcelona moderate hotels

Hotel España - Designed by Modernista school leader, Domenèch i Muntaner, and used by Salvador Dalí, the two-star España is close to Las Ramblas. It has 90 rooms and a splendid Catalan dining room. One of the few Barcelona central hotels with parking.

Hostal Gat Xino - in the Raval district, this will suit travellers on a budget but it has great style in a convenient area. There's lots of modern art, a rooftop terrace and you can even hire bicycles.

Hotel Peninsular - In a narrow street near the Barcelona Liceu opera house, this is another Modernista gem. Architectural detail includes Moorish arches in the dining rooms and a grand interior balcony.

Hotel Oriente - On the Ramblas, the three-star Oriente is one of Barcelona’s original ‘grand’ hotels. Built on the site of a monastery, the 142-rooms have welcomed Maria Callas, Toscanini and Errol Flynn. The dining room and lounge are reminders of its heyday.

Meson Castilla - Near the Ramblas this is all 50's rural Spain inside with a massive breakfast room and an attractive rear patio. Some rooms are small but others feature terraces.

Catalunya Plaza - This friendly three star 19th century hotel in Barcelona city centre is decorated in seasonal themes. There are 46 rooms and breakfasts are splendid.

Hotel Fira Palace - On a quiet Barcelona street, the four-star Fira Palace is modern with elegant rooms and marble bathrooms. Eat at the restaurant El Mall or the Piano Bar for snacks. There’s also a pool.

Hotel Princesa Sofia - The five-star hotel on Avenida Diagonal is the largest hotel conference venue in Barcelona. It has spacious bedrooms, a terrace restaurant and indoor pool.

Barcelona luxury hotels

W Barcelona - opened in late 2009, this massive 23-storey hotel has made an impact on Barcelona's skyline and added to Barcelona's reputation for exciting architecture.. It's perched on a newly developed port area with direct access to the beach.

Ohla Hotel - Set in the Gothic Quarter on the site of the palace of the first Count of Barcelona, there's a 24-hour restaurant and rooftop pool.

Hotel Arts - This award winning Barcelona hotel of 44 floors has a beach location and all 483 rooms have sea views. Works by Spanish artists feature in public areas. Good restaurants and a fitness club.

El Palace - Previously the Ritz, the hotel on Gran Via has been a by-word for glamour since 1919 with huge chandeliers, opulent fabrics and marble bathrooms. Past visitors include Sophia Loren, Woody Allen and Salvador dali who has a suite named for him.

A £27m facelift over two years was completed in 2011 with luxurious fabrics, antiques and bespoke furniture. There's French and Catalan food in the Michelin starred Caelis restaurant and the rien de Rien bar features cocktails and jazz.

Mandarin Oriental - In the stylish Eixample district near Gaudi's Casa Batiló, this is a chic hotel with balconies overlooking the Passeig de Gràcia or the hotel's own garden.

Hotel El Rey Juan Carlos I - On Avenida Diagonal this five-star Barcelona hotel has 375 rooms . The 37 luxury suites have panoramic views. A patio restaurant has palm trees and there’s a health club and pools.
